Apple has officially revealed a new strategy related to the design of its chips.
Artificial intelligence has been part of Apple's DNA for much longer than you might think . At WWDC 2024, Craig Federighi made this clear: "We've been using artificial intelligence and machine learning for years to help us achieve our goals." The Neural Engine integrated into the A (iPhone) and M (Mac and iPad) chips is concrete proof of this, making it possible to optimize Face ID, photo features, and even Siri.
While Apple Intelligence marked the company's official entry into the era of consumer generative AI, a new use for this technology is emerging behind the scenes. This time, AI could revolutionize the way we work at the very heart of Apple Silicon processor design.
AI at the service of chip designers
Johnny Srouji, Apple's vice president of hardware technologies, revealed this new strategy during a speech in Belgium. After receiving an award from the Imec research group, he stated that "generative AI techniques offer strong potential for optimizing designs in less time and can represent a significant productivity gain."
The speech, a recording of which was seen by Reuters, reveals Apple's growing interest in chip design using generative artificial intelligence. The official also highlighted the importance of partner companies like Cadence and Synopsys. These companies are actively working to integrate artificial intelligence into their chip design software.
According to Johny Srouji, these tools are "essential for managing the complexity" of Apple processors. "This approach could significantly accelerate the development of future generations of Apple Silicon chips. They could be integrated into future Apple devices, such as the foldable iPad.
A global vision of artificial intelligence
Johny Srouji took advantage of his speech to recall Apple's journey in the field of semiconductors, from the first A4 chip in 2010 to current processors.
He notably described the transition of Macs from Intel to Apple Silicon in 2020 as a "huge gamble" for the company. He explained that the Apple company "had no plan B, no splitting of the lineup, so we bet everything, including a colossal software effort," he explained.
The first results of this AI strategy applied to chip design could be seen in the next generations of Apple processors.
